Liverpool ended 2021 on a low on Tuesday, as they slumped to a 1-0 loss against Leicester City.

The Foxes, who played Manchester City 48 hours ago and were missing a number of players due to injury against the Reds, were able to secure the win through Ademola Lookman’s second-half goal.

While Liverpool were nowhere near their best, things could have been a lot different had Mohamed Salah converted his first-half penalty. He saw his effort saved by Kasper Schmeichel and could only head the follow-up against the crossbar.

It means Liverpool are now six points back on leaders Manchester City, with a trip to Stamford Bridge to come on Sunday to play Chelsea.

Maddison puts off Salah

Usually so reliable from the penalty spot, Salah scuffed his effort at goal from 12 yards on Tuesday and gave Schmeichel the chance to make a save.

The miss brought an end of 15 consecutive goals from the spot for the Egyptian in the Premier League and James Maddison has been credited with getting in Salah’s head before he stepped up.

The midfielder was seen conversing with the Liverpool forward as he lined up his effort. Leicester’s No.10 then stood directly behind Salah as he strode forward to take the shot.

Mane’s ‘alarming run’ highlighted

While Salah’s penalty miss will understandably be referenced as the main talking point from the King Power Stadium, Sadio Mane could have also won the game for the Reds.

The Senegal forward was played through on goal by Diogo Jota early in the second half and subsequently skied his shot over the bar.

Mane has been one of the best forwards in the Premier League in recent years, although he is enduring a poor spell at the moment. The blank against Leicester made it nine games in succession without a goal or an assist.

Freddie Keighley outlined the 29-year-old’s “alarming” performance as one of his five talking points from the game.

Klopp on ‘strange’ night for Liverpool

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp believes Leicester deserved to beat his team on Tuesday and had his say on a “strange” game.

While the makeshift Foxes defence performed admirably against Liverpool’s stellar attackers, the visitors comfortably made enough chances to take at least a point back to Merseyside.

Klopp said afterwards he was disappointed by the work of his team when they were in possession.

“We were just not good enough. We still had enough chances,” he said. “What we did with the balls was just not right. We played a really bad game, so it was well deserved

“Our decision-making [was poor], maybe a little bit of luck [was missing]. That’s how it is. We should have had more of those moments. We had enough to get the win, but if you lose you need more of them.”
