Married At First Sight star Tayla Winter has launched a scathing attack on the show’s producers, claiming one day someone will “end their life” after appearing on the controversial Channel 9 show.
The reality star told Channel Seven’s Sunrise on Thursday morning she was given an “unethical edit” and this year’s participants were “pressured” by producers to say things which made them uncomfortable.
“The way it’s done is unethical,” she told Sunrise hosts Natalie Barr and David Koch.
“I think that going into the show, I had no idea how controlled it would be. There is a lot of manipulation and it’s pretty scary.
“Production was pretending to be your best friend the entire time, and you build a trust with what you think is a really strong relationship with them.”
She went on to reveal several participants from this season had been dealing with relentless online trolling over their so-called villain edits.
“I think it’s really dangerous . . . I know that some of my castmates are really struggling. I’ve been struggling,” she said.
She encouraged aspiring cast members to rethink signing up for the show.
It’s not the first time Winter has spoken out about how the Channel 9 team created an environment that left participants extremely traumatised.
“You prepare yourself for an unfavourable edit, however you still think you’re somewhat in control of how you’re portrayed,” she told the Daily Telegraph earlier this month.
“Personally, I thought I was going to get a good edit. When context is removed, your audio is cut and pasted to create conversations. Your facial expressions and your reactions are something completely different to what actually happened.
“We were told things like: ‘Could you do a frustrated face?’ But you could be doing that to, say, a mouthful of food you disliked, and then it is edited so you’re making that face to a girl walking into a dinner party.”
The Tasmanian nurse was chosen to marry Hugo Armstrong, with whom she refused to share a bed.
During filming, the 27-year-old was told she was not allowed to leave the Sky Suites and said she felt as if she was going crazy.
“It is nothing like what I expected,” she said.
“I remember calling my mum and telling her ‘I can’t leave.’ She said: ‘Tayla you can leave, they can’t physically hold you there’.
In her most recent interview, she added: “I hope that people just understand what it’s really like. And that’s why I’m trying to spread a bit of awareness about it because it is dangerous.
“I truly believe someone will end their life over this show one day.
A shocked Barr replied: “Wow. That’s a serious claim.”
