MAGIC PLANESWALKERS one-shot series continues with NOTORIOUS in August

BOOM! Studios has been releasing fan-favorite comics based on the world of the Magic: The Gathering collectible card game since 2021, with ongoing series, miniseries, and one-shots building out the characters and concepts of the game for fans new and old. Next month the publisher is set to release the first in a series of one-shots featuring team-up stories starring the game’s Planeswalkers characters, mages who can travel between realms of the multiverse. Now The Beat is pleased to share details for the second team-up one-shot, Magic Planeswalkers: Notorious, which is due out in August. The 40-page one-shot is written by Cullen Bunn and Rich Douek, with art by French Carlomagno and Carlos Pedro.

Here’s how BOOM! Studios describes Magic Planeswalkers: Notorious:

Two of the most popular Planeswalkers in Magic: The Gathering history–fan favorite vampire Sorin Markov and the incomparable necromancer Liliana Vess, come together for a team-up that’s not to be missed! On a mysterious, unnamed plane, the two must work together to prevent a diabolical figure from unleashing hell across the multiverse.

Meanwhile, two of the most mysterious of the Planeswalkers, Oko and Calix, cross paths elsewhere on another plane…

Along with a main cover by Jahnoy Lindsay, the latest MTG one-shot will also sport variant covers by Frany and Justine Florentino.

Magic Planeswalkers: Notorious is the first MTG-related comic from prolific writer Cullen Bunn, who is primarily known for his horror comics like Harrow County and The Sixth Gun. It’s the latest MTG title from Rich Douek, who took over writing chores on BOOM!’s recently-wrapped Magic ongoing series from departing scribe Jed MacKay back in December.
