Maid on Netflix: Ruth Dodsworth opens up on past with domestic abuse ‘Life isn’t the same’

Margaret Qualley stars in the limited series based on Stephanie Land’s memoir as Alex, a young mother who leaves her emotionally manipulative boyfriend and starts a new job as a maid. The new Netflix show has shed light on the harsh reality facing many living with abusive partners and led to an honest conversation between ITV Cymru Wales Weather presenter Ruth and Lorraine on Monday morning.

Ruth’s ex-husband, Jonathan Wignall, was jailed for three years earlier this year for nearly a decade of domestic abuse and coercive control.

The weather presenter opened up about her marriage to Jonathan amid Netflix’s new series, Maid, receiving praise for its realistic depiction of similar relationships.

She admitted to Lorraine she struggled to sit through the series after finding some scenes uncomfortable.

“I’ve tried and I’ve recognised so many similarities,” Ruth said.

Though she added: “But that doesn’t mean we shouldn’t be watching these programmes and having these conversations.”

Ruth is now happily married to her new husband, whom she credits with ‘saving her life’.

However, after suffering abuse from her first husband Jonathan, she’s aware of the challenges.

“I’m lucky in that I’ve got a family around me, and I have friends,” she told Lorraine.

She told Lorraine making the decision to leave her first husband was difficult but has ultimately made her life far better for it.

“It’s not been easy,” she admitted. “It’s horrifying, it’s terrifying.

“Got no money, got no home, nothing. Everything goes. And you just know that life will never be the same again.

“But, do you know what? Thank goodness life will never be the same again, because it’s brilliant.”

Lorraine noted her guest looked much happier, and her face lights up when she talks about her new husband.

Ruth now works with the police to help them better identify the signs of domestic abuse which may not be obvious from the outset.

She recognises there is still plenty of work to be done, as the coercive and controlling behaviour she was subjected to has only been a criminal offence in the UK since 2015.

Maid is available to stream on Netflix. Lorraine airs from 9am on ITV.
