Wearing the color pink while mixing up pink challah dough was a unifying symbol for a breast cancer awareness gathering this week at Chabad of Encino.
The women-only gathering mixed up the ingredients and got the pink-tinted dough ready for baking at home on Friday, Oct. 28, in preparation for Shabbat.
The Thursday event included a presentation by Tarzana Dr. Taaly Silberstein and a talk by a mother and her two daughters, all breast cancer survivors.
The get-together aimed to bring awareness to breast cancer prevention and treatments, as well as support for, and a remembrance of, people whose lives have been affected by the disease.
“Pink Challah Bake is about bringing Jewish women together to celebrate our culture in joy and unity,” Rebbetzin Chana Herzog said in a press release for the event, “while bringing awareness to breast cancer prevention, treatment, and remembering, celebrating and supporting loved ones.”
The event was organized by the Women’s Learning Group at Chabad of Encino; Maman Nonprofit, an organization that provides support for people in need of “mothering” individuals; and Sharsheret, a national Jewish nonprofit that provides support and educational information for people living with, or who have an increased genetic risk for, breast or ovarian cancer.
