Maldron hotel in Glasgow city centre is ideal base to get out and explore

YOU can live your whole life in a city and still uncover hidden delights that you never knew were there.

My fiancee Lauren and I recently spent an overnight in Glasgow centre, where we experienced a new side to the city — where the old meets the new.

We love finding those secrets the city has to offer — but there’s nothing hidden about the Maldron Hotel.

We stayed in one of the stunning executive rooms, which offers an incredible view over the city and comes equipped with a flat-screen TV, free WiFi and coffee machine.

The new 4H hotel has 300 stylish and air-conditioned rooms across 12 floors and is located at the corner of Renfrew Street — just across the road from the Pavilion Theatre and Cineworld.

The king-sized bed and the complimentary robes and slippers provided an added touch of luxury and comfort.

There was a real buzz about the hotel, partly down to a large number of the Tartan Army in town for Scotland’s clash against Israel at Hampden.

The central location makes it the perfect base for visiting Scotland’s biggest city.
It just a few hundred yards from the Royal Concert Hall and the busiest shopping destination, Buchanan Street.

Transport hubs including Buchanan Bus Station, as well as Queen Street and Glasgow Central train stations, are all within walking distance, making it easy to get around.

It was time for our first stop of the day — which meant whisky for breakfast!
We took a fascinating tour of the Clydeside Distillery on the banks of the River Clyde, learning about the city’s industrial history and its role in the global whisky trade.

The distillery is located within the Pumphouse building of the old Queen’s Dock, where ships would set sail and export Scotch whisky to every continent of the world.

It has just launched its first single malt whisky, Stobcross, and we were lucky enough to try some ahead of its official release.

Soaking up the single malt with some lunch seemed like the most sensible thing to do next and The Duke’s Umbrella was highly recommended.

It’s a brilliant new gastropub on the city’s Argyle Street with a really cool vibe and great decor — and a cool crowd.

They serve up traditional pub classics with a fine dining twist but it’s far from pretentious. Lauren opted for the Slow Braised Ox cheek, while I went for The Duke’s Burger. Both of which were delicious.

Remember that Scotland game I mentioned earlier?

Well, kick-off was approaching, so we watched Scotland snatch that last-gasp 3-2 win over Israel in a packed pub on Sauchiehall Street before wandering back to the hotel with the sound of Yes Sir, I Can Boogie ringing in our ears.

We were booked in for dinner at the hotel’s Grain And Grill restaurant, where you can choose from a host of bar favourites.

We’d recommend their tasty buttermilk chicken tenders and the chicken fillet burger, with a large helping of gravy-soaked disco fries to share.

After a quick freshen up we headed to a gig at the city’s iconic King Tut’s — just one example of many activities the hotel staff are happy to recommend through their partnership with Glasgow Life.

After a fab night’s sleep, we took full advantage of the buffet breakfast which included everything from bacon and eggs to croissants and cereals but, most importantly, a great cup of coffee from the hotel’s own brand, Red Bean Roastery.
It was the perfect way to start the day.

Whether it’s trying new things or just visiting the old favourites, the Maldron is perfect for exploring Glasgow.
