ANTIOCH — A man created a major scare Thursday when he was seen walking with what police said appeared to be a rifle near two schools, police said.
Police later determined the apparent weapon was a replica, not capable of firing live rounds.
It happened around 11:30 a.m., according to a statement from Antioch police. Several callers alerted police to a possibly armed man walking around Antioch Middle School and Antioch High School.
The middle school is in the 1500 block of D Street and the high school is in the 700 block of W. 18th Street. The campuses are about a half-mile apart.
Police said they located the man when they arrived.
“The suspected weapon has been located and determined to be fake,” police said in the statement. “Thank you to all our wonderful eyewitnesses for calling in and giving detailed descriptions.”
Police did not say immediately whether the man would face legal consequences. Thursday marked the final day of the school year at both schools.
