Man City were accused of ‘bottling’ their Champions League semi-final against Real Madrid as they crashed out in heartbreaking fashion.
Real produced a staggering late fightback as substitute Rodrygo scored twice in the closing minutes to take the game to extra-time.
Karim Benzema then slotted home penalty to complete another stunning comeback by the Spanish side, but this one was the best of the lot.
This defeat will be painful for Pep Guardiola’s side, who lost in last season’s final to Chelsea, and their search for European football’s top prize goes on.
And talkSPORT host Jason Cundy couldn’t believe the way City threw it away.
Speaking on The Sports Bar, Cundy said: “What have City done? I have not seen a team capitulate and collapse and bottle a game like that.
“They had gone. This is going to be hard to take as a City fan, but they bottled that. They bottled that tonight.
“As soon as Real Madrid got that goal back, I’ve looked at you [Jamie O’Hara] and gone ‘could they?’ And you looked at me, but we didn’t say anything.
“A minute later they were back into it. They were the first two shots they had on target and they were the two goals.
“The next one, he’s kept them in it the ‘keeper. They fell apart.
“This is going to hurt and I feel for City fans. We know what it’s like as a football fan, they will feel crushed right now.
“Somehow they managed to snatch defeat, not even from the jaws, from the stomach of victory. They’d already swallowed the meal. The victory was in the tummy and they’ve reached down, Real Madrid, through the throat to the stomach and managed to snatch victory back.
“Remarkable game. Unscripted drama and this competition this year has been phenomenal.
“Credit to Real Madrid… well played.”
It will also hurt at seeing their rivals Liverpool reach the Champions League final on Tuesday and remain on course for an unprecedented quadruple.
The Reds already knocked them out of the FA Cup in the semi-finals and are just one point behind them in the title race.
City will now either use this result as inspiration to go and win the title, or crumble under the pressure.
“I sense Liverpool smelling blood in the title race,” talkSPORT’s Adrian Durham said after the final whistle at the Bernabeu.
“They’re already in the Champions League final, no need to worry about that. They’ve got the FA Cup final to come and can relax until that happens.
“Keep doing what they’re doing in the Premier League and sit back and watch City, who imploded here tonight.
“Are they going to do the same here in the Premier League? Well, we’ll wait and see.”
