Man City ‘sloppy’ and Guardiola wouldn’t have been happy with derby win, says Souness

Graeme Souness has labelled Man City ‘sloppy’ despite their sensational victory over Manchester United on Saturday afternoon.

Pep Guardiola’s side thrashed their city rivals 6-3 in the Manchester derby at the Etihad Stadium, to go one point behind Arsenal in the Premier League table.

Erling Haaland netted another hat-trick, to become the first player to do so in three successive Premier League home games.

The Norway international, who received a rating of 10/10 by French news outlet L’Equipe after the match, took his goal tally to a phenomenal 17 in only ten appearances for his new club, and 14 in eight league games.

There was also a hat-trick for Phil Foden. No City player had scored three goals in one game against United since Francis Lee in 1970, but two came at once for the club as Foden and Haaland’s hat-tricks were completed nine minutes apart.

A fine strike by Manchester United star Antony and two late goals from Anthony Martial reduced the deficit for Erik ten Hag’s side, but it proved not enough.

Despite City’s superiority throughout, Souness believes Pep Guardiola will be unhappy given his side’s sloppiness at the back to allow a poor United side to half the deficit by full-time.

“As good as they [Manchester City] were, for most of the game they were sloppy,” Souness told White and Jordan on talkSPORT.

Guardiola will most likely be unhappy with the three goals conceded by his team

“Pep Guardiola would have had a go at his side at full-time

“To concede three goals against that Manchester United team, totally, totally flatters Man United. They were not at the races yesterday.

“I think it shows the gulf of the two teams in Manchester.

“City are a very special team, though, and when they replace players you expect them to be inferior coming on, but it is more like-for-like.”

City are next in action when they face Danish champions FC Copenhagen in the Champions League on Wednesday night.

It will be another chance for Haaland – who has been dubbed the ‘best No.9 at the moment’ by Luis Suarez – to get on the scoresheet yet again.

City then face Southampton on Saturday in their next Premier League game, which is live on talkSPORT.
