Man City’s Pep Guardiola makes UEFA demand after ending Champions League curse

Manchester City boss Pep Guardiola wants both FIFA and UEFA to come together for a better solution to the demanding schedule his players face after finally lifting the Champions League trophy with the Etihad outfit. It’s been a long wait for Guardiola to lift the coveted European trophy again with his previous triumph coming with Barcelona way back in 2011.

City agonisingly missed out on the Champions League two years ago, losing the 2021 final to Thomas Tuchel’s Chelsea side. But there was no stopping Guardiola’s side this year, who ran away with the Premier League title in the end before beating Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

That set up the chance of becoming just the second English side to win the treble heading into Saturday night’s Champions League final. That only added to the occasion for Guardiola to try and end his search for that elusive Champions League crown he’s been longing for ever since he took over at City.

But, while Inter Milan made things difficult for City at times, Guardiola’s side never truly looked troubled and Rodri’s goal was enough to see them crowned European champions. Guardiola almost looked relieved in the celebrations, beaming from ear to ear.

But the Spaniard admitted afterwards that he was exhausted after putting in everything to lead City to the historic treble. He also took aim at UEFA and FIFA for not giving him and his players more chance of a longer rest with several City players joining up with their international squads next week.

“Right now, I don’t have any energy to think about next season,” Guardiola said. “It’s impossible. We all need a break. The season is too long.

“Most of these guys go with their national teams to play a game so [taps head with finger continuously]. UEFA-FIFA, think about it. Come on! They finish the Premier League what? Two-three weeks ago? Then holiday and then they come back for too many games?

“These guys will have two or three weeks off and have to start again next season. We demand and we push them – it’s too much.”

City’s players will likely be given an extended break after the round of international games as their pre-season trip to Seoul, South Korea isn’t scheduled until the end of July. Most Premier League teams are set to return to training at the start of next month, but Guardiola will want his players well rested.
