Man Utd ‘about to finalise Gakpo transfer agreement’ in fresh twist

Manchester United are about to ‘define an agreement’ for PSV Eindhoven star Cody Gakpo, according to reports. The Netherlands international was on Erik ten Hag’s radar back in the summer, only for Antony to end up moving to Old Trafford instead. However, it appears a potential transfer could be on the cards as the January window creeps closer…

Manchester United backed Ten Hag with six summer signings, with Antony the fifth to arrive at Old Trafford.

But the Red Devils know they need more if they’re to end their agonising wait for the Premier League title, with Gakpo one player in their sights.

Since his move to United failed to take off back in the summer, the Netherlands international has bagged nine goals from 12 Eredivisie matches – clocking up a remarkable 11 assists along the way.

And, now, Italian journalist Rudy Galetti has claimed United are ‘about to define an agreement’ for Gakpo as the January window nears.

It’s said the Red Devils are ‘ready to please’ Ten Hag by bolstering the Dutchman’s attack in the New Year.

Man Utd transfers: Plans for next three signings are damning on Solskjaer

United have, in the past, been hesitant when it comes to acquiring players in January – believing that’s often not the best time to do business.

But with the club getting better and better under Ten Hag, it seems as though the Glazers and the rest of the hierarchy are prepared to make an exception.

It’s said United are ‘about to finalise an agreement’ with PSV for the 23-year-old, who could be available for just £25million this winter due to his side’s need to balance their finances.

If United do land Gakpo, it’s possible he’ll go anywhere across the front three of Ten Hag’s attack.

With Marcus Rashford and Antony doing well on the left and right respectively, it’s even possible the PSV star will be used as a centre-forward.

United are light in that department, with injuries hampering Anthony Martial while Cristiano Ronaldo has lost his goalscoring touch.

And all signs point to them winning the race for the forward, who was also linked with Leeds and Everton when the transfer window was open in the summer.

Should that happen, as expected, Gakpo will become the club’s 13th signing from the Eredivisie.

Raimond van der Gouw and Jaap Stam joined the club back in the 1990s from Vitesse Arnheim and PSV respectively.

Ruud van Nistelrooy, Park Ji-Sung, Andreas Pereira and Alexander Buttner all moved in the years when Sir Alex Ferguson ruled the roost.

Under Louis van Gaal, in came the likes of Tim Fosu-Mensah, Daley Blind and Memphis Depay.

And, since then, United have proceeded to bring in the likes of Tahith Chong, Donny van de Beek and Antony.

Regarding Gakpo, meanwhile, the PSV star recently opened up on his failed move to United – and admitted he’d been close to leaving Dutch football behind.

“I was close to leaving, I spoke to Erik ten Hag a few times at Manchester United,” Gakpo told The Times.

“In the end the deal didn’t go through, which was a shame, for me and my development, and because Manchester United is one of the biggest clubs in the world.

“But also for PSV, because to transfer a player to Manchester United is a good thing for the club.

“It ended about a week before the end of the transfer window and in that week I had to decide if I would go to Leeds or Southampton. In the end I stayed, but it was a stressful period.

“I always said if I stay here, it’s my childhood club. It’s not a punishment. I like being here, I want to win trophies here and do my best for the club.

“But if I got the chance to go to the Premier League or something, of course I would have to consider that option. At that time it was hectic for me but I recovered pretty quickly.”
