Manchester United have been handed a lifeline in their pursuit of Harry Kane after Tottenham’s owner reportedly told Daniel Levy to sell the striker.

Erik ten Hag had identified Kane as his top transfer target for the summer, with the Dutchman desperate to sign a world-class No.9.

However, despite being the initial frontrunners for the England captain, United were forced to drop their interest with a deal looking near-impossible.

Spurs chairman Levy has little interest in selling his star player, and even if he did he values the 29-year-old at over £100million and would prefer him to move abroad rather than to a Premier League rival.

As a result, the Red Devils have been focusing their attention on Atalanta’s Rasmus Hojlund, but while personal terms have been agreed the two clubs remain far apart on a fee.

Meanwhile, Bayern Munich have emerged as Kane’s most likely destination with the Bundesliga giants preparing a fourth bid, but Tottenham are still hopeful that the player will sign a new contract with his current deal expiring next year.

However, according to The Telegraph, Spurs’ majority owner Joe Lewis is said to have informed Levy that he is unprepared to let Kane run down his contract and become a free agent.

He has told Levy that if he cannot convince the club’s all-time top goalscorer to stay then he must be sold this summer when they can still get a huge fee.

These reports come shortly after Tottenham manager Ange Postecoglou admitted he was ‘not relaxed’ over Kane’s future.

It remains to be seen whether this news will bring United back into fold as while they now know Kane is up for sale they still may not be able to afford him.

Ten Hag was reporteldy operating on a £120m budget at the start of the transfer window, with almost all of that blown on Mason Mount and Andre Onana.

Now more than ever the club needs to sell to raise funds for one of if not both Kane and Hojlund, with the departure of Alex Telles to Al-Nassr the first of hopefully many outgoings for fringe players.
