Manchester United head coach Erik ten Hag is a fan of Casemiro and the Dutchman even pushed to sign the player over Adrien Rabiot before knowing he was available this summer, according to reports. The Red Devils boss has been forced to deal with fierce criticism regarding his use of United’s new £70million man after he was named on the bench for the 6-3 Manchester derby defeat to Manchester City.
Casemiro has only started one match for United since arriving at Old Trafford – the 1-0 Europa League defeat to Real Sociedad.
He has been named on the bench for all four of United’s Premier League matches since he joined – playing a combined total of 82 minutes.
However, The Telegraph are now reporting that Ten Hag is set to give the defensive midfielder the nod this weekend when his side travel to Everton.
Furthermore, it’s claimed Ten Hag was personally pushing for the signing of Casemiro during an uncertain window when United were exploring a deal for Juventus’ Rabiot.
It would indicate that Ten Hag is still very much a fan of Casemiro as he looks to slowly embed his new arrival into his United side.
Rio Ferdinand was among those to criticise Ten Hag’s handling of the player, claiming it was “disrespectful” to name him on the bench against City.
When quizzed on whether Scott McTominay deserved his place in the starting XI, Ferdinand responded: “You can’t say that.
“The geeze [Casemiro] hasn’t been given a chance, he hasn’t been given a fair crack of the whip. He’s come in and played in a Europa League game against some dead team.
“He ain’t been given a start in the team when he’s fit and ready, he’s regressed in terms of fitness, so he’s now worse off than when he came.
“He still had to get up to speed when he came from that league to this league.
“I wonder the impact it’s having on someone like him. Yes he’s experience and whatnot, but he must be sitting there thinking, ‘wow, I’m happy to be here at Man United but I’m feeling a little bit disrespected here, given what I’ve done’.”
Christian Eriksen and Bruno Fernandes have also been playing consistently in midfield but both flattered to deceive against Manchester City.
Eriksen was arguably at fault for both of City’s opening two goals as he struggles to get to grips with the defensive responsibilities of a deeper role.
Despite his lack of minutes at club level, Casemiro started both of Brazil’s World Cup warmup matches against Ghana and Tunisia.
He is currently on course to start for his country at the base of Tite’s midfield in Qatar.
United now travel to Cyprus to face Neil Lennon’s Omonia side in the Europa League group stages on Thursday.
