Man Utd can sign their next captain and marquee striker in one deal

Manchester United’s potential search for a new captain should swing the balance in Harry Kane’s favour when Erik ten Hag is picking his top striker target this summer. The Red Devils are expected to elect a new skipper at the end of the current campaign when current captain Harry Maguire could yet depart in search of regular playing time.

Even if Maguire is to remain at Old Trafford, it now seems highly unlikely that he will keep hold of the armband with Raphael Varane and Lisandro Martinez now Ten Hag’s first-choice defensive pairing.

Bruno Fernandes’ captaincy credentials were recently scrutinised following the 7-0 defeat at Liverpool – a performance that highlighted United’s glaring lack of leaders.

That’s why United should consider going big on the signing of Kane this summer when he could potentially be up for grabs if he fails to agree a new contract at Tottenham.

Kane is England captain and has led his side out at two World Cups and the European Championships, meaning he knows what it takes to wear the armband and lead by example.

In every instance, the striker stepped up to the plate and never shied away from any form of responsibility or challenge for his country even if he eventually fluffed his lines by blazing the second penalty against France over the bar in Qatar.

The 29-year-old represents the exact kind of profile you would want from any captain. He is an honest pro that never gets into trouble whilst also driving the standards both on the training field and in matches.

He is unlikely to come cheap but considering United could effectively be signing their next captain in Kane, a £100million move virtually sells itself.

Providing Kane stays fit, you are almost guaranteeing a goal output of 25 plus goals every season until his powers start to wane.

Crucially, his game has never been dependent on pace meaning much like Robert Lewandowski and Karim Benzema, he could well get better with age and experience.

Osimhen would perhaps prove to be a better fit for United’s style of play but Kane is also Premier League-proven and he would be extremely hungry to win the title if he is bold enough to leave Spurs.

If Kane was to join United, he should fall under immediate consideration for the captaincy. It is utterly bemusing that he does not wear the armband for Tottenham.

He has far greater leadership qualities than Fernandes, who seems to do nothing but moan and berate his team-mates when they need an arm around them.

Kane is the kind of player that would relish the chance to take on the captaincy and it would help him reach another level on the field.

Osimhen is highly likely to cost a mega-money fee that exceeds any price United would have to pay for Kane if he cannot agree a new contract with Spurs.

If that is the case, Daniel Levy will be mindful that he would risk losing Kane on a free transfer in the summer of 2024 should he decide to play hardball.

Wout Weghorst has proved useful for United and a real handful, you can only begin to imagine what Kane is capable of achieving if he were to replace the Dutchman this summer.
