The 20-year-old Urawa Red Diamonds shot stopper has been scouted by United since 2017 with the Premier League side ready to make him the most expensive signing in the history of the J League, Sponichi reports.
United have identified huge potential in the American-born goalkeeper and have already made a formal offer of £5million, eclipsing the £4.5m Celtic paid to sign Kyogo Furuhashi in 2021.
The report adds negotiations between United and Urawa are progressing smoothy with a transfer viewed as imminent.
Suzuki has represented Japan at every youth level but is still to make his senior national debut.
This season, he has been limited to just five starts in cup competition with veteran Shusaku Nishikawa still his club’s first choice option in goal.
Suzuki has made eight league appearances in total to date.
United’s goalkeeper situation remains hugely uncertain but it could be the case where the club are required to bring in two new options this summer.
David de Gea’s contract at the club expired last week, leaving as a free agent as a result. United are still in talks with the Spaniard to extend his stay at Old Trafford but on greatly reduced terms.
Erik ten Hag was unable to guarantee de Gea would be his first choice goalkeeper at the end of last season with the club’s pursuit of Andre Onana indicating the manager wants a new no1 this summer.
United remain in talks with Inter Milan move for the 27-year-old and are thought to have made an offer of £39million including add-ons. Inter want closer to £45million but there is expectation the two clubs with find a compromise.
United may also require a back-up option should de Gea not re-sign with the club.
