McCarthy has been utilised behind the scenes by Ten Hag as a forwards coach but clearly has no issue getting to know all members of the squad, appearing chummy with Onana after the former Inter Milan goalkeeper completed a £47million move to Old Trafford. McCarthy has been brought on the tour as part of Ten Hag’s meticulous preparations, the 45-year-old once again set to be a big part of the backroom staff.
As Rashford was revitalised last season, signing a bumper new contract after spearheading the Red Devils’ attack with a personal record 30 goals in all competitions, McCarthy was praised for the role he played in working with the England man.
In March, Ten Hag explained: “I think the most important is the way of playing, that gives him a base, gives him a structure, the way of play is in his favour because I knew his skills and then you also being staff around who can make it better and make it progress.
“I thought we needed one on the staff who is specific and responsible for strikers, Benni is doing a good job. I think the staff has a good balance and we do it together, it’s not only about Benni McCarthy, all have specific jobs in our staff. There’s a good vibe, they challenge each other, it’s a total package, and it’s not about one person.”
McCarthy, however, was keen to play down his role and was humble about the work that he put in order to help Rashford and the other forwards at the club. “That’s not just down to me. We are a team,” he told South African publication iDiski Times in May.
“Like I always have said to everyone ‘there’s no I in team’. When we do things, we do things as a collective. We try and achieve the best that we possibly can. So all the coaches contribute. Everyone has their function in the team to try and just make the team have success and that.”
Having gotten to know one new signing in Onana, McCarthy likely will be preparing for the arrival of another with Rasmus Hojlund set to become the club’s latest addition.
With the 20-year-old seen as a raw but promising talent, Ten Hag will be hoping that McCarthy can help mould the Denmark international into a top Premier League striker.
