Ole Gunnar Solskjaer reviews Manchester City defeat
Manchester United believe they can lure Brendan Rodgers away from Leicester City due to a clause in his contract.
The Red Devils are being forced to consider their options following a poor period of results that has seen pressure mount on Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
The Norwegian is into his third full season as boss but looks unlikely to deliver a trophy on current form.
As a result Rodgers, whose stock has risen due to his work at Leicester, is on their radar and could move due a Champions League condition in his deal, reports the Star.
Should a team come knocking who are at Europe’s top table then the Northern Irishman has a release clause in his contract at the King Power.
Rodgers guided the Foxes to the FA Cup last term whilst delivering successive fifth place finishes, each time narrowly missing out on the top four.
The former Celtic boss recently reaffirmed his commitment to his current employers amid interest from elsewhere.
He is well backed at Leicester but will soon reach the point where he can no longer take them any further due to the gulf in resources between them and their rivals.
Rodgers has previously held the reigns at Liverpool and is keen to have another crack at a top job, with United potentially the next opening.
The Manchester club would like to appoint a British coach, furthering the appeal of Rodgers.
Solskjaer has been backed by the Old Trafford hierarchy, who chose to overlooked Antonio Conte before he headed to Tottenham, but patience may run thin, especially if United look like they could miss out on the top four.
The title looks to be a long shot with Chelsea already nine points clear whilst United are already out of the Carabao Cup.
Solskjaer, who will get a chance to regroup during the international break, has seen his team lose five of their last ten in all competitions.
That includes humiliating home defeats to Liverpool and Manchester City, which has highlighted the difference in class that currently exits.
Solskjaer has been well backed in the transfer market with Cristiano Ronaldo, Jadon Sancho and Raphael Varane all arriving in the summer.
Despite having a star-studded squad at his disposal the United boss has struggled to make things click, with his lack of previous success and experience used as a stick to beat him with.
Vote: Who is the true heir to Messi and Ronaldo?
However the 48-year-old insists he is not on borrowed time despite their latest derby defeat.
He said: “We can’t, or I can’t, look at myself and say this is the way I want Man United to play.
“I’m in good communication all the time with the club and that’s very up front and honest about the situation.”
Solskjaer also added: “It’s so hard to go through a game like this and we understand everyone’s frustration and disappointment but these boys will do everything they can and the staff will do everything we can and try to get us back to everything we were: front foot, positive, attacking Man United. We’ll do what we can to do that.”
