Rangnick questions team spirit after Man Utd lose

New Man United boss Erik ten Hag has confirmed that he plans to “renew” the squad following a hugely disappointing campaign at Old Trafford.

The Red Devils rounded-off their season in typically underwhelming form as they lost 1-0 to Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park to finish sixth. Points-wise, the campaign was already United’s worst in their Premier League history.

One intrigued spectator at Selhurst Park was ten Hag, with the Dutchman having travelled to the UK following the early termination of his contract with Dutch giants Ajax. He will have been evaluating various positions within his current squad – a huge overhaul expected to be completed at Old Trafford – and ten Hag has already detailed that he is aiming to add fresh bodies.

Speaking in an interview with Man United’s official website, he said: “First, we have a break. We will start pre-season on 27 June and I will get a few of the squad, [a few] of the individual players. In certain positions we want to renew the squad, but as I said, one year ago, this squad was second in the league, so there is potential and I’m really looking forward to co-operating with the squad.”

A number of players could be set to wave goodbye to Old Trafford ahead of next season. The likes of Paulo Pogba, Edinson Cavani, Jesse Lingard, Nemanja Matic and Juan Mata are all out of contract at the end of the campaign, whilst Dean Henderson, Aaron Wan-Bissaka and more have been linked with exits.

Should all of those aforementioned players elect to depart, then there will likely be a host of new faces welcomed to the club in order to cope with those absences. It of course remains to be seen who the Red Devils will add to their squad despite the fact a number of ten Hag’s former charges including Jurrien Timber, Frenkie de Jong and Antony having all been linked with a switch to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman has not yet commented on any potential transfer rumours but in the meantime has called on the current crop of players to catch his eye during pre-season. He continued: “That is what I expect [players to impress].

“I have high expectations from myself and that is also what I demand from my squad. They have to co-operate together and they have to give every day their best.

“And I would say, for me, good is not good enough. We have to do better.”

The Red Devils have already announced three pre-season fixtures ahead of the 2022/23 campaign. They will take on fierce rivals Liverpool in Bangkok in mid-July, before clashes with Australian outfit Melbourne Victory and Crystal Palace as ten Hag continues his preparations.
