Manchester United are looking into the prospect of sending Mason Greenwood out on loan for next season, according to reports.

The 21-year-old has not played for United since January last year after he was arrested and charged with attempted rape, controlling behaviour and assault.

All charges against Greenwood were dropped in February this year, with the Crown Prosecution Service stating that ‘in this case a combination of the withdrawal of key witnesses and new material that came to light meant there was no longer a realistic prospect of conviction’.

United went on to announce that the club would ‘conduct its own process before determining next steps’ in relation to Greenwood’s future at Old Trafford.

According to MailOnline, United’s internal investigation is ongoing but the club are considering allowing Greenwood to leave on loan for the entirety of next season.

The report claims that a move to another Premier League club is highly unlikely, while three potential destinations are Italy, Spain and Turkey.

Greenwood still has two years remaining on his £75,000-a-week contract with United and it’s understood that the forward has indicated his desire to return to the first-team squad.

However, United made the decision in March that Greenwood would not be allowed back at the club until this summer at the earliest.

But a potential loan move outside of England would allow United more time to assess their options regarding Greenwood’s long-term future at Old Trafford.

A representative of Greenwood told The Athletic earlier in March: ‘Mason is 21, he has been cleared and should be allowed the opportunity to rebuild and move forward with his young life.’

However, it’s understood that players in both United’s men’s and women’s teams have major reservations about Greenwood’s return.
