Erik ten Hag has made Mount a top summer target with the midfielder, who has just one year left on his contract at Stamford Bridge, eager to make the move to Old Trafford.
United saw an opening bid of £40million rejected by Chelsea this week, with the Blues valuing the 24-year-old at closer to £70million.
While the Manchester club are prepared to increase their offer to £50million, is it likely to be their last, not prepared to overpay for a player who will be available on a free transfer next year.
United could move onto other targets should Chelsea stand their ground. According to journalist Steve Bates and Give Me Sport, the club are reviewing other midfield options with Eze among them.
The 24-year-old has been on United’s radar since the start of the year, enjoying a superb second-half of the season to earn a place in Gareth Southgate’s England squad.
Tottenham and Liverpool are among the sides to have been credited with interest in the attacking midfielder along with Paris Saint-Germain.
Eze could represent as cheaper alterative to Mount, with former United skipper Gary Neville recently questioning the club’s pursuit of the Chelsea star.
‘I am surprised about the Mason Mount one to be honest with you,’ Neville told Metro.co.uk.
‘For the reported fee… he is a very good player, that isn’t a question for me.
‘But I look at the players United have got already in terms of Bruno Fernandes, Christian Eriksen, Casemiro, Fred and Scott McTominay. Do I think Mason Mount is the player to go in and sort all that out? I’m not quite sure.
‘Mason Mount would be a very good addition to Manchester United’s squad, but it is a lot of money for a squad addition.’
