Man Utd flop Wout Weghorst ‘eyed by Premier League rivals’

Manchester United flop Wout Weghorst is reportedly being eyed by Everton, despite failing to score a single Premier League goal during his loan spell at Old Trafford. The striker joined the Red Devils from Burnley in January but looks set to return to his parent club this summer as United boss Erik ten Hag chases an upgrade to bolster his attack.

Weghorst was enjoying a loan spell with Besiktas when United made their move for him earlier this year. And the 30-year-old went on to feature 31 times for the north west giants. The player was a regular starter during his early days at Old Trafford amid an injury crisis in the United attack. But he soon fell out of favour after firing a series of blanks in front of goal.

The Netherlands international, who bagged a quickfire brace in the World Cup quarter-finals against Argentina last year, found the back of the net against Real Betis in the Europa League and also struck in the Carabao Cup against Nottingham Forest after penning a temporary deal with United.

But he wasn’t able to register any other goals despite racking-up nearly 1700 minutes of playing time for the Red Devils.

According to talkSPORT, Everton could now make a move for Weghorst as United are not planning on signing the player permanently. The Toffees, who appointed Sean Dyche as manager in January, secured their Premier League survival on the final day of the season following a miserable campaign that saw them win just eight top-flight matches.

Only Wolves scored fewer than Everton’s 34 Premier League goals, and the Toffees ended the season in 17th position, with winger Dwight McNeil finishing the campaign as the club’s top scorer after bagging just seven goals.

Ten Hag, meanwhile, will be desperate to sign an out-and-out goalscorer ahead of the next campaign as he looks to help his team kick-on and compete for the Premier League and Champions League trophies. United will be playing in European football’s top-tier club competition once again next season after finishing third in the Premier League.

Tottenham striker Harry Kane has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford after notching 30 Premier League goals throughout the 2022/23 season. And if the Dutchman can get his hands on the England captain a year before his Spurs contract expires, it could provide his side with the catalyst they need to enjoy an upturn in fortunes over the coming years.
