Man Utd have a new Michael Carrick for Ten Hag in Christian Eriksen

Manchester United boss Erik ten Hag has been told that he may have found a new Michael Carrick that can feature in the Red Devils’ team for years to come. Carrick, who recently took up the Middlesbrough head coach role after temporarily leading United last season, was an underrated cog under Alex Ferguson and was widely praised for his ability in midfield.

Summer signing Christian Eriksen has been compared to Carrick after making a strong start to life at Old Trafford as a deep midfielder. The playmaker has thrived alongside either Casemiro or Scott McTominay, and his presence has eased the responsibility on Bruno Fernandes to progress the ball through midfield and create chances.

Former United midfielder Paul Parker sees shades of Carrick, Andrea Pirlo and Teddy Sheringham in Eriksen, and can envisage the Dane staying in the United team for several years due to his versatility. “Eriksen is brave enough to try those passes that could make a difference,” Parker told BonusCodeBets.

“And if they do get cut out, it’s very rarely that it was a bad decision. It might have been a poor execution or it might have been great defending. He reminds me of Teddy Sheringham who was never the quickest player. Teddy played well into his thirties, and was still very clever with the ball and with his movement. And the brain is always going to be quicker than the feet.

“He can also play a deeper position in the midfield and he will benefit from that when he gets even older. You can compare him to Pirlo who wasn’t making big tackles. You can also compare him to Michael Carrick, who was an unsung hero for many years at Man United.

“Michael Carrick never came off the pitch with dirty shorts, but he intercepted the ball more than any other player on the pitch. I think Eriksen is definitely going to be one player who will play for a number of years, because he is able to adapt into different types of roles.”

DON’T MISS

Eriksen has admitted how much he enjoys playing alongside Casemiro, as the Brazilian recently came into the team following his £60million signing from Real Madrid.

“I think you can see in the games – we like playing together,” Eriksen said in United’s pre-match press conference ahead of their Europa League tie with FC Sheriff.

“Of course we’re still getting to know one and other well on and off the pitch, but he’s a nice guy outside the pitch as well, and on the pitch I think football knowledge people know he’s been playing games like this for last eight years at [Real] Madrid, so I’m not surprised he can cope, but it’s lovely to play with him.”
