Yet the 53-year-old, when pressed on De Gea’s poor distribution, added: “Say it like this: we are in the right direction.
“But there are occasions in the game, issues in the game, we have to improve, definitely, if we want to make the next step and win trophies.”
Earlier in the week, Ten Hag had admitted he wouldn’t guarantee De Gea the No 1 shirt next season.
