“I am very grateful for the people I have met and worked with during my second career at Ajax, and what we have achieved and been through together. I feel the need to take some distance, to get some rest, and to do other things.
“It doesn’t feel good to take decisions about the future of this wonderful club in the coming period. That is why I have decided to resign.”
Van der Sar spent the best part of a decade as a player at Ajax between 1990 and 1999. He had a spell at Juventus before moving to England to sign for Fulham in 2001.
He is most remembered for his time at United, where he won four Premier League titles, three League Cups and Champions League in 2008. He made 266 appearances for the Red Devils and won 130 caps for the Netherlands.
