Manchester United have opened talks with Chelsea to sign Mason Mount this summer.

Erik ten Hag’s side have emerged as favourites to sign the Blues midfielder, who has entered the final year of his contract at Stamford Bridge.

Personal terms are thought to be agreed with Mount ready to leave west London.

United are still to make an official offer for the 24-year-old but according to The Times, senior figures at the club are in discussions with Chelsea.

The club have made it clear they are eager to sign Mount and are said to be ‘increasingly confident’ of reaching an agreement’ to bring the England international to Old Trafford.

United are expected to make their formal offer once their season concludes after Saturday’s FA Cup final showdown with Manchester City.

Recent reports have suggested United are preparing a £55million offer for Mount which is expected to fall short of Chelsea’s valuation.

Chelsea could ask for as much as £70m for their academy graduate despite him having just 12 months left on his contract.

Mauricio Pochettino, confirmed as the new Chelsea manager on Monday, had been eager for Mount to stay, identifying him as a key component to his summer rebuild.

But a stalemate between the club and player has shown no signs of ending. The Times report Chelsea believe they have done everything possible to keep the player at the club, insisting Mount has been reluctant to engage, leaving negotiations to his representatives.

Those claims have been disputed by sources close to Mount, who insist money is not the main reason why there has been no breakthrough.

Liverpool are also interested in signing Mount but are currently focused on wrapping up a deal to sign Alexis Mac Allister from Brighton.

Arsenal also want to tempt the midfielder across the capital to north London but have made the signing of West Ham United captain Declan Rice their priority.
