Manchester United have reportedly taken a liking to Santos youngster Marcos Leonardo. The goal-hungry striker is attainable for a bargain fee this summer, but transfer chief John Murtough could be set to miss out altogether as Roma progress towards a shrewd signing.
At just 20 years old, Leonardo is already approaching 50 senior goals for Santos. Last season he added 21 to his total haul, and he is up to 14 across all competitions this campaign.
Despite the forward putting up impressive numbers as he continues to mature, the Brazilian outfit are reportedly prepared to accept a bid of around £13million to let him go. Roma, Lazio and Nottingham Forest are all believed to be in the mix.
According to Calciomercato, Man Utd are also keen on Leonardo, who boasts a record of more than one goal per game for Brazil U20.
But Murtough and co are seemingly poised to miss out, with Roma ramping up negotiations and threatening to make a significant breakthrough. Leonardo is reportedly keen on a move to Serie A despite his Premier League suitors.
Seeing the signing through would taste extra sweet for Roma boss Jose Mourinho. Not only would the Giallorossi pip cross-city rivals Lazio to Leonardo’s signature, but the Portuguese would also be getting one over on the Red Devils, who he managed between 2016 and 2018.
Although Ten Hag looks set to miss out on Leonardo, Hojlund represents another young marksman with sky-high potential – albeit with a considerably higher price tag.
The outgoing Atalanta star will set United back a whopping £72m, with earlier deals for Mason Mount and Andre Onana taking the Red Devils’ total summer spend towards the £200m mark.
