Manchester United will not recall Hannibal Mejbri from his loan at Birmingham City on transfer deadline day.

20-year-old Mejbri, who made his first-team debut for United last season under Ralf Rangnick, joined the Blues on a season-long loan deal in the summer.

The midfielder has started 14 of Birmingham’s 28 Championship matches, making 23 appearances in all and providing his fourth assist if the season in Saturday’s 2-2 draw with Blackburn Rovers.

While United strengthened in midfield in the summer with the signings of Christian Eriksen and Casemiro, an injury the Dane suffered in Saturday’s win over Reading is a cause for concern.

The former Tottenham and Brentford midfielder was cut down by a nasty challenge from Andy Carrol in the 3-1 win, leaving Old Trafford on crutches and wearing a protective boot.

Amid a frantic run of fixtures that sees them play 19 matches over the next 57 days, United have considered a move for a another midfield option should they receive bad news on Eriksen, who underwent a scan on Monday.

Given United’s lack of funds, another loan move or recalling one of their own are likely to be their only options if forced into action. But BirminghamLive report Mejbri will see out the season at Birmingham under John Eustace.

United have a handful of youngsters impressing on loan spells in the Championship this season with Amad Diallo enjoying a wonderful campaign with Sunderland.

The 20-year-old has scored seven in his last 13 appearances with the Black Cats and while United are in need of reinforcements in attack, ten Hag said at the start of the month he would be reluctant to recall the player and potentially harm his development.

‘We consider everything,’ ten Hag said at the beginning of January when asked about recalling Diallo.

‘As long as it’s strengthening the squad. But at the same time, I have a little bit of a reservation for that because I don’t want to stop the process. He’s [making] really good progress there, so I’m happy with that.

‘But I know also, they need experiences, young players. When we decide [for him] to come back, he has to be a player who can be starting XI, compete for starting XI [at a] minimum, for a lot of games to come in and have an impact.’
