Man Utd no longer ‘in cuckoo land’ with three exits Keane wanted nearly complete

Manchester United will soon no longer be “living in cuckoo land” as Roy Keane previously put it. Erik ten Hag is close to completing the exits of the three players the former Red Devils skipper claimed were not at the level required.

Keane has never been shy about giving his honest verdict on United. There have been some turbulent times at Old Trafford in recent years, coinciding with his spell as a pundit on Sky Sports.

Early on in the 2020/21 season, Keane gave a scathing verdict on United’s midfield options. Nemanja Matic, Fred and Scott McTominay were in the firing line.

He claimed the trio were all not good enough for where United wanted to be. Speaking on Sky Sports, Keane said: “People talk about Fred and McTominay in midfield, they’ve had their chance, we’ve seen them.

“I don’t think they’re bad players, but they won’t get United back to winning league titles. Tim [Cahill, fellow pundit] makes a point there about Man United having great players, I don’t see it, I don’t see the great players.”

He doubled down on his verdict soon after. Keane said: “[Donny] van de Beek has come into the club, and there’s nothing wrong with biding your time, but if you think Fred, McTominay and Matic in midfield will get Man United back to the heights of winning titles, then you’re living in cuckoo land.

“They won’t, I think they’re good players – I like them – but not to the next level, and that’s surely what United are looking for.”

Matic has already left United, moving to Roma last summer on a free transfer. But now there is a real possibility that the other two players could also be on their way.

United want to sell Fred in this window, while they are also open to offers for McTominay. Fred has attracted interest from Galatasaray but the Red Devils are yet to receive an offer they deem acceptable.

Fred made 56 appearances under Ten Hag last season. However, he does not appear to be a part of the Dutchman’s plans moving forward.

Meanwhile, West Ham are keen on signing McTominay. Their latest offer of £30m for the Scotland international was rejected by United earlier this week.

The Hammers have already returned with an improved bid for Harry Maguire, which has been accepted. If they do the same with McTominay, then Keane may get his wish three years on from one of his most famous rants.
