The goalkeeper had emerged as a possible replacement for David de Gea after the Spaniard departed as a free agent this summer to end his Old Trafford career after 12 years at the club. But the signing of Onana has all but consigned Henderson to the exit as Ten Hag shakes up his goalkeeping options.
Elanga and Henderson will become the eighth and ninth players to be sold or released since they were brought through the system by Solskjaer. Largie Ramazani, D’Mani Mellor, Ethan Laird, Dylan Levitt, Ethan Galbraith, Tahith Chong and James Garner have all departed since, with only Garner attracting a sizeable fee following his £15m move to Everton last summer.
But the combined fees for Elanga and Henderson – believed to be in the region of around £40m – will prove to be useful in helping Ten Hag capture Hojlund and a backup goalkeeper.
