Manchester United duo Scott McTominay and Lisandro Martinez should have vented at their team-mates ‘a couple of days’ after their 6-3 defeat to Manchester City instead of in the direct aftermath, according to Alan Hutton. The duo were far from happy with the club’s display at the Etihad Stadium. And tempers boiled over following the contest, with Erik ten Hag allowing everything to unfold.
Manchester United were dire in their defeat to City, with hat-tricks from Phil Foden and Erling Haaland giving Pep Guardiola’s side all three points.
And, after the game, it emerged Martinez and McTominay had led an inquest in the Etihad dressing room.
The duo were reportedly among the most vocal as United players tried to understand where they’d gone wrong on a torrid day at the office against their fierce rivals, with tempers boiling over.
Yet Hutton, speaking to Football Insider, thinks the United pair should have saved their anger for a couple of days after the game instead.
And he thinks that, by doing this, the Red Devils can remain a far more harmonious camp in the future.
“I’ve been in dressing rooms where this has happened before,” said the former Aston Villa, Tottenham and Rangers star.
“It’s not ideal right after a game, but it can work.”
McTominay and Martinez have been regulars in the United team this season, with the pair silencing their critics in the process.
The former was widely expected to be on the bench in most matches this term, especially after the arrival of Casemiro from Real Madrid.
But McTominay has, for the most part, been an ever-regular in the team.
Martinez has faced scrutiny over his height, with many – such as Jamie Carragher – expressing a belief he’s too short to thrive in the Premier League.
Yet the Argentina international has responded with some slick and solid displays, becoming one of the first names on Ten Hag’s team sheet in the process.
Though United players confronted each other after the match with City, the Red Devils have been able to bounce back in the short time since.
They edged their way to a 3-2 victory over Omonia, with Marcus Rashford bagging a brace and Anthony Martial also on target.
And United were also able to beat Everton on Sunday, winning 2-1 courtesy of goals from Antony and Cristiano Ronaldo.
Next up for the Red Devils is a rematch with Omonia in the Europa League tonight.
And Victor Lindelof has insisted United’s camp is a happy one as they seek a third European win so far this season.
“I think the feeling in the group is very good,” he said.
“We have a lot of good players and good people in the squad who make it good energy.
