There is an extension in the Spain international’s deal, but United may not trigger it as they also have Dean Henderson returning from his loan at Nottingham Forest next season.
After De Gea’s error against Brentford, Ten Hag backed his goalkeeper and was convinced that he can adapt to the way the Dutchman wants his football to be played. “I am convinced that he can do it,” Ten Hag said in August. “And it’s obvious the second goal, okay [he was at fault]. He showed already, I have seen in training and in the first games that he can do that.”
While Ten Hag has also praised the Spaniard’s leadership. “That is clear – his experience helps us a lot,” the United boss said. “He organises and he leads the back four. It’s really important to give the team the right mentality and the attitude to win games.”
