Wout Weghorst admits he ‘said some things’ to Solly March before the Brighton star missed his crucial penalty in the FA Cup semi-final shoot-out against Manchester United.

After 120 goalless minutes, Sunday’s clash at Wembley went to penalties with the first 12 spot-kicks coolly converted in a tense stand-off.

After slotting home his effort, Weghorst collected the ball and walked back to the centre circle where he kissed the ball before handing it to March, exchanging a few words in the process.

March lifted his effort clean over David de Gea’s cross bar with Victor Lindelof then stepping up to smash home and send United into the final.

Reflecting on his exchange with March, Weghorst said: ‘I already said to do it before we started, to some of our guys but nobody did it. I scored, saw the ball and tried to get a few advantages to maybe help us win it.

‘I walked to him and said some things but at the end, I went to him because I felt sorry because that was the one that missed.

‘I just tried everything and normally it doesn’t make a difference but maybe it did.’

Casemiro, Diogo Dalot, Jadon Sancho and Marcus Rashford all scored perfect penalties with Marcel Sabitzer’s effort almost kept out by Robert Sanchez before Weghorst and Lindelof found the back of the net.

Rashford and Sancho missed crucial penalties in the same stadium in the Euro 2020 final against Italy but were nerveless from 12 yards on Sunday with Erik ten Hag praising the pair for stepping up.

‘From Rashy and Jadon, we knew also they are comfortable on penalties,’ ten Hag said in his post-match press conference.

‘They dealt with it. It is a time ago [when they missed for England] but they are so calm and composed in training with penalties.

‘I know this is a different occasion but i think it is great they have this experience and it will help them in the future.

‘There is no hesitation because they are great penalty takers.’
