Premier League title race: Man City maintain healthy lead at top

With less than a week to go in the January transfer market, it’s been a quiet window for Ralf Rangnick and Manchester United.

Rangnick is still yet to make his first season since taking over as the club’s interim boss following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in November.

United have been linked with moves for several players, but none of those have yet come to fruition.

Plenty of players have also been linked with exits from Old Trafford, and with just short of a week to go, there is still time for some of those moves to take place.

With that in mind, here, Mirror Football brings you the latest gossip from Old Trafford.

Haidara setback

Manchester United have reportedly suffered a setback in their pursuit of RB Leipzig midfielder Amadou Haidara.

According to The Mail, Haidara wants to remain with the Bundesliga side until the end of the current campaign, before making a decision on his future.

United remain in need of a defensive midfielder to bolster their squad and the 23-year-old has been linked with a potential move to Old Trafford.

Haidara is currently away on international duty with Mali at the Africa Cup of Nations where they will meet Equatorial Guinea in the last-16 on Wednesday.

The defensive midfielder joined Leipzig from Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in 2018 and has gone on to become a mainstay in the starting XI.

Newcastle are set to push again for a deal to sign United midfielder Jesse Lingard, according to reports.

The Telegraph say the Magpies are working hard on a move to sign Lingard until at least the end of the season where he will then become a free agent.

Eddie Howe’s side have been busy in the transfer market so far, bringing in the likes of Kieran Trippier from Atletico Madrid, as well as Chris Wood from Burnley, and Newcastle don’t look finished yet.

Lingard has flown out to Dubai for warm weather training while the Premier League winter break takes place.

The same outlet say United have already previously rejected an offer from Newcastle for Lingard, but the second one will reportedly see them earn between £5-6million in a loan fee.

Newcastle are also said to be prepared to cover the England midfielder’s £80,000-a-week wages.

The Red Devils reportedly look set to miss out on any deal to sign highly-rated Borussia Monchengladbach midfielder Denis Zakaria.

According to football journalist Fabrizio Romano, German giants Bayern Munich and Borussia Dortmund are pushing for a deal, while a move to the Premier League seems unlikely at present.

Romano claims United have held talks with Zakaria’s agents but have not submitted any formal proposal.

Juventus are also said to be interested in the Swiss international, but Gladbach are demanding €7m (£5.8m) for a January deal.

Zakaria has less than six months remaining on his current contract and looks set to leave Gladbach on a free at the end of the current campaign.
