Former Premier League star Jonathan Walters believes that Manchester United will be among the clubs interested in Aaron Ramsdale if he leaves Arsenal. The goalkeeper has been replaced as the Gunners’ No 1 this season by David Raya, prompting conversations about whether he would be tempted to head elsewhere for more regular game time.
United completely rebuilt their goalkeeping ranks over the summer, allowing David De Gea to leave the club as a free agent to pave the way for a new shot-stopper that was more capable of playing out from the back.
Erik ten Hag instructed the Red Devils to pursue Andre Onana, with a deal worth approximately £44million being agreed with Inter Milan for the Cameroon international. However, the ex-Ajax star is yet to justify his price tag at Old Trafford.
Onana has made several costly errors between the sticks so far this season and a plethora of former players have since spoken out about how Ten Hag made a mistake in pursuing the 27-year-old instead of putting his faith in De Gea. As a result, several goalkeepers have been linked with making a move to Old Trafford, and ex-Stoke star Walters believes that Ramsdale must be a consideration for the Red Devils.
He wrote on X (Twitter): “I absolutely love Aaron Ramsdale. First-class goalkeeper and comes across as a great guy. I’m certain there will be multiple top clubs queuing up to take him if he becomes available… Man Utd being one of them!”
Ramsdale has fallen out of favour at the Emirates Stadium this season, with Mikel Arteta making summer signing Raya his new No 1 following his arrival from Brentford on a loan-to-buy deal.
The pressure of having another competing goalkeeper has been detrimental to the England international’s form, with his performance over the weekend highlighting the weaknesses in his skillset.
As a result, there have been calls for Ramsdale to leave the Gunners and join a side where he will become first choice. Ex-Liverpool star Peter Crouch is of the opinion that the 25-year-old must move on as well, telling TNT Sports: “He’s got to move on I think. He wants to be part of the England set-up, certainly for the Euros. Going forward, he’s got a stake on the number one jersey, but he has to be playing. It doesn’t look like he’s going to be here.”
