Tom Davies, Yerry Mina, Andros Townsend and Asmir Begovic were all trimmed from the wage bill when their contracts expired at the end of June. There has therefore been little reason to sanction a sale for a player such as Pickford or the centre-forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin.
Regardless, a sale of Pickford would have meant spending a huge amount on a replacement on a goalkeeper who was just as good as the former Sunderland man. For Everton, that would have made little business sense and was not a risk worth taking.
United have eventually settled on signing Onana, but the 27-year-old did not come easily. The Red Devils reportedly struggled to meet Inter’s demands, evidencing why signing Pickford at nearly double the price was out of reach.
