Ryan Mitchell Smith, 26, had been charged with stabbing the police dog, but had evaded custody until Tuesday.
Smith had allegedly fled from police in his dad’s pickup truck as investigators were searching for his then-missing father, according to police.
ABC 13 said Smith works for a private crime scene cleanup company. They said he led police on a pursuit that ended when he crashed the truck in Memorial Park in Houston and fled on foot.
He was arrested while walking on a highway not long after police had found his father’s body hidden inside his garage after searching the home for a second time.
An autopsy will determine how Smith’s father died.
Police charged Smith with evading arrest, interference with a police service animal and robbery from his weekend behaviour.
The dog underwent surgery for life-threatening injuries, but is fine.
