Rangnick bemoans lack of killer instinct in front of goal as Man Utd crash out of FA Cup

Edinson Cavani and Jesse Lingard will both return to Manchester United training after spending time away from the squad.

The Red Devils are preparing for Premier League action against Burnley.

Ralf Rangnick’s side beat the Clarets at Old Trafford several weeks ago and will make the short trip to Turf Moor.

They will be bolstered by the return of Lingard and Cavani, two men who are out of contract in the summer.

United lost on penalties to Middlesbrough on Friday night, ending their FA Cup hopes.

It means they are now fighting on just two fronts with the Champions League returning this month alongside their cup commitments.

Lingard will return to the group amid a public spat regarding his failed move away.

The midfielder was looking to leave on loan in January with Newcastle and West Ham both keen, but a switch never materialised.

It was initially claimed that Lingard asked for time away – a story he refuted himself on social media.

Rangnick was again forced to address the situation.

He said: “I told you what my information was and my knowledge was and of course, I would have loved to have had Jesse in the squad.

“We were one outfield player less on the team sheet today, so why would I have allowed him to have four or five days off? I would have loved to have had him in the squad but it was not the case.”

United’s football director John Murtough is believed to have advised Lingard to take additional time off in a telephone call, claims the MEN.

Cavani meanwhile asked Rangnick if he could stay in Uruguay for two more days after playing for the national side.

Uruguay beat Venezuela 4-1 on February 1 before the striker jetted back to the UK.

Cavani scored for his country in their World Cup qualifier and will be pushing for a start on Tuesday night.

United will be aiming to consolidate fourth place in what is a full programme of Premier League fixtures.

They are narrowly ahead of the likes of Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham but teams have not yet played the same amount of games with postponements meaning several sides have games in hand on each other.

“Physically, I don’t think we need to lift the squad,” Rangnick said on Friday night.

”With Paul [Pogba] having been out for two and a half months, it was normal that he was substituted after 65, 70 minutes.

”Jadon [Sancho] had no injury, he was just feeling some fatigue and had some cramp so that was the reason why we decided to take him off.

”Of course the players are disappointed like we all are but again this is football, this can happen.”
