Manchester United are confident of completing a deal to sign Inter Milan goalkeeper Andre Onana before the side’s pre-season tour of the United States.

The Cameroonian is United’s first choice to replace David De Gea, who left the club last week following the expiry of his contract.

Onana, 27, played under Erik ten Hag for three years at Ajax and the Dutchman feels the Cameroonian’s ball-playing skills could transform United’s style of play.

United had an initial bid of around £38m turned down by Inter, who are seeking around £51m for the former Ajax ace.

But the BBC say United are confident of reaching a compromise in the next few days and it would be ‘staggering’ if Onana was not a United player by the time United jet out to the east coast.

United take on Arsenal in America in 11 days’ time but they fly out in a week’s time.

Onana will become United’s second signing of the summer following the £55m arrival of Mason Mount from Chelsea.

The England midfielder could make his debut today as United take on Leeds in Oslo.

Mount was part of a 26-man squad but the likes of Dean Henderson, Antony and Dean Henderson were excluded.
