Atletico Madrid and Brazil striker Matheus Cunha has emerged as a target for Manchester United, with some reports suggesting that a £42m move is close to being agreed.

The 23-year-old only moved to Atleti last summer from Hertha Berlin, signing a five-year deal with the Spanish club, having also played for Sion in Switzerland and RB Leipzig.

The Brazilian did not exactly have a blockbuster first season in Spain, making just eight starts in La Liga, with 29 league appearances in total, which yielded six goals.

His best season in terms of goals since moving to Europe came back in 2017-18 when he netted 10 times in the Swiss Super League for Sion.

However, his performances have seen him win seven caps for his country, although he has failed to score in any of those games.

Nevertheless, the Red Devils are reportedly keen on bringing Cunha to the Premier League, with European football expert Julien Laurens stating that he is on the club’s shortlist of forwards and that he would be interested in the move to Old Trafford.

TalkSPORT have gone further and report that a deal worth €50m (£42m) is close to being agreed between Manchester United and Atletico Madrid.

Cunha appeared on Monday night for Atletico, coming on in the final 10 minutes of the game as Diego Simeone’s side beat Getafe 3-0 in La Liga.

Cunha replaced former Chelsea striker Alvaro Morata, who scored twice in the game, while Atletico Madrid showed off their attacking talents as Joao Felix started and Antoine Griezmann also came off the bench, with the Frenchman scoring the third goal.
