Manchester United’s MLS goalkeeper target ‘good enough’ to be Old Trafford No 1

Former Premier League goalkeeper Brad Friedel has named Manchester United’s ideal replacement for the outgoing David de Gea. The Spaniard is currently out of contract and head coach Erik ten Hag is in need of a talented No 1 to takeaway given what look’s like an impending departure for De Gea.

De Gea has been a key player for the Red Devils since breaking into the first team to replace Edwin van Der Sar in 2011. The 32-year-old was the club’s highest paid player but has endured a series of difficult spells of form over the years.

Ten Hag seems set to bid one of the club’s longest servants goodbye in hopes of freeing up some cash. One name that has been linked with a move to Old Trafford is one that comes recommended by a former goalkeeper who knows the league well.

Brad Friedel enjoyed 18 years in the Premier League and the 52-year-old former USMNT goalkeeper believes the MLS already has a replacement that fits the bill.

“I think Djordje Petrovic should be on the radar of Premier League clubs,” Friedel told OLBG. “He could start right now for pretty much any team in Europe, although he has a learning curve of course.

“From what I have seen of him, there has been no better goalkeeper in MLS for a long time. I think Petrovic is good enough to start for Man Utd and Chelsea.

“People are talking about Man Utd’s goalkeeper situation a lot, but I’m not sure they have the budget right now for the keepers being mentioned in the papers.”

The New England Revolution goalkeeper has been linked with a transfer after another impressive season in MLS. The Serbian has kept six clean sheets, with just 22 goals conceeded in 18 games.

Aged just 23 there is room for improvement, despite already performing consistently well at a high level. Even if De Gea does stay Petrovic would be an ideal back-up for the Premier League giants and has thrived at New England have started the MLS season well.

His team currently sit second in the league, but seven points behind leaders Cincinnati. The two teams are set to face each other next in a season defining MLS game.
