The Glazer family are – finally – set to be closing in on a decision as to who takes over the Old Trafford giants after putting the club up for sale seven months ago.
While reports that Sheikh Jassim has had a bid accepted are said to be premature, the Qatari’s fifth bid – which came six weeks after the initial deadline – has put him back in pole position.
Ratcliffe’s over is for around 60% of the club and would see at least two of the Glazer siblings stay on as shareholders.
Under the Briton’s ownership, United’s debt would remain and be financed through more borrowing.
However, Jassim has vowed to instantly wipe the club’s debt.
United currently pay debt interest payments of around £50m-per-year.
Jassim’s ownership would instantly wipe those payments, and in doing so boost Erik ten Hag’s budget by £50m.
That would be a timely boost for the Dutchman, especially given he’s been given an initial £120m budget this summer.
Ten Hag wants to sign a centre forward, a central midfielder and a goalkeeper this summer.
Those transfers could cost around £250m and his only option at this moment in time is to raise the extra £130m needed to finance those deals is by selling players.
Harry Maguire, Anthony Martial, Anthony Elanga, Alex Telles, Dean Henderson and Eric Bailly are all available for transfer.
One of Fred or Scott McTominay will also be sold.
