If you have not heard the name Maor Cohen, you will soon enough. The visionary designer whose genderfluid collection MAOR sells to such stores as Mr Porter, lH Lorezno, Selfridges, Browns and The Webster has geared a new collection within his line, specifically for women. MAOR Women’s launched with a first exclusive on Net-A-Porter on December 9th, 2022. “When I initially decided to create women’s jewelry, Net-a-Porter was my primary focus—their curation is impeccable,” says Maor. In the near future the Women’s collection will be carried by international retailers.

Maor started his career as an entrepreneurial boy who sold jewelry at 13 in his seaside village. He then carried a ‘jewelry kit’ of beads, wire, stones and charms around while traveling the world in his ‘20s so he could design bracelets for those he describes as “kindred spirits.”

Maor’s creative passion for jewelry design was ignited again when he moved to Los Angeles, inspired by his travels and experiences. He evolved into a designer that has innovated techniques and new technologies to create a style entrenched in sustainable jewels with an elevated, distinctive look. Maor creates seemingly simple and versatile pieces based on familiar forms – yet they are ingeniously engineered.

Maor explains his entry in what was at the time a niche market, “After a very long, extensive market research, I finally grabbed my sketchbook and started to create MAOR as a gender fluid, unisex brand. I wanted to appeal to a demographic that was all-inclusive.”

He now translates this sensibility and affinity for layering into the MAOR women’s collection. “Since the beginning, layering has been a core concept in the original collection and the new women’s line for Net-a-Porter,” says Maor. “Throughout the line, I show women that you can mix different metals, stones, textures and proportions. By doing so, you are creating your own individualized jewelry curation.”

He credits his wife of nine years as his muse and inspiration for the women’s collection –pieces that women could wear every day, with a twist of edginess

All pieces in the collection are in recycled gold and silver with upcycled recut diamonds and gemstones.

The Unity Collection – a significant focus of MAOR’s women’s launch – features an unending knot that represents a continuous bond, whether it be in romantic love or friendship. While knots have signified enduring relationships throughout history, Maor’s Unity knot is ultra-modern and has been combined with the iconic curb chain jewelry style. The melding of these two classics in 18K solid gold featuring diamonds or gemstones has created a fresh, new look for women of all ages.

“This brings a special element to the wearer that stays true to the MAOR ethos – designed to be flawlessly layered with all other MAOR pieces.”

Maor lets us in on his engineering technique to form the curb chain design he chose to implement, which is unique to any others on the market. “The initial design process for the Unity collection started in the summer of 2018. My thoughts were how – or if – I could manipulate the curb link into a bangle. I wanted to implement movement to the bangle and engineer a seamless, refined lock mechanism. With these ideas in mind, I then dove into a year-and-a-half engineering process.”

He continues, “It was trial and error until absolute perfection! I had to think outside the box for this process –challenging myself to create a magnificent link/lock that would unite the two halves of the bangle seamlessly.” This has carried over into the rest of his collection, which ranges in price points from accessible to aspirational. The Unity Collection on Net-a-Porter ranges from approximately $1,800 to $20,000.
