California public school enrollment has hit a 20-year low, according to data released this week by the state’s education department.
Overall, the state had 110,000 fewer students enrolled in public kindergarten through 12th grades during 2021-’22 than during the previous school year — a 1.8% decline.
The map above shows the change — numerical and by percent — for each county.
The nine most populous counties all saw a decline in enrollment. Of those, the greatest percentage decreases were in the counties of San Francisco (5.24%), Santa Clara (4.85%) and San Mateo (4.31%).
