If you are traveling for Thanksgiving, it may be too late for an influenza shot, but it may be wise to check flu activity where you are headed.
The flu season is off to an early start, and the CDC has a map that tracks hot spots in the U.S. Southern and Southeastern states have the highest number of flu cases right now, but the number of cases in California is also considered high.
A closer look at the Bay Area shows that flu activity is still moderate, but health department officials expect cases to surge in the coming weeks. This is on top of already high levels of the respiratory virus RSV sending many children to hospitals in the region.
Santa Clara County health officials recently announced a new data dashboard to help residents track flu risk in local wastewater. Data is collected from samples in Gilroy, Palo Alto, San Jose, and Sunnyvale.
If you see influenza spiking in your city, the CDC advises these methods to help prevent catching the flu:
– Clean your hands frequently.
– Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth.
– Clean and disinfect frequently touched surfaces at home, work or school, especially when someone is sick.
– Get plenty of sleep, be physically active, manage your stress, drink plenty of fluids, and eat nutritious food.
