Map: Which Sierra highways remain closed for the July 4 holiday

Lingering snowpack and winter road damage have kept several highways in the Sierra Nevada closed as the Fourth of July holiday approaches.

Following are the status reports of some major routes as of June 28. In addition to the sites linked below, updates for the state highways can be found at the California Department of Transportation website or on its mobile app or by calling (800) 427-7623.

Closed (red)

1/ Highway 89, Lassen Volcanic National Park. Lassen Peak Highway remained closed between Sulphur Works and Devastated Area. As of June 22, the park said only 4 miles of highway remained to be plowed, but parking lots and other road preparations will need to be completed before full reopening. Updates: NPS Lassen website.

2/ Donner Pass Road. The road (Old Highway 40) has been closed since a rockslide June 9 west of Donner Lake. Updates can be found at the Nevada County road closures site and the county’s public works Facebook page.

3/ Highway 120 (Tioga Road). Plowing continued on the road through Yosemite’s high country, and road damage has been discovered. There is no scheduled date for reopening. Updates: NPS Yosemite website.

4&5/ Sequoia/Kings Canyon. Highway 180 (No. 4) remained closed from 7½ miles east of Hume Lake Road to Kings Canyon National Park. Generals Highway (No. 5) was closed between Hospital Rock and the Giant Forest Museum. Updates: NPS Sequoia/Kings Canyon website.

Partly closed (yellow)

1/ Highway 70. The section between the Greenville Wye and Jarbo Gap was scheduled to reopen Wednesday, June 28. One-way traffic control will be in place at all hours at the site of a debris slide just east of Belden, and drivers should expect  30-minute delays there.

2/ Highway 395 at Topaz Lake.  Because of storm damage to the road, there is one-way traffic control with a traffic signal at all hours about 2 miles south of the Nevada line. Repair work is scheduled to begin on July 10 and last into the fall. During the construction, Highway 395 will remain open with one-way traffic control conducted by flaggers during work hours and with the signal outside those hours.

3/ Glacier Point Road, Yosemite. The road will initially reopen only for the weekends: from 6 a.m. July 1 to 10 p.m. July 4, and from 6 a.m. July 8 to 10 p.m. July 9. Starting July 15, the road will be open seven days a week, but drivers can expect 30-minute delays on weekdays until 9 p.m. Updates: NPS Yosemite website.

Yosemite in general: The park is warning of long delays at entrance stations and lack of parking from now through the fall. It advises arriving before 8 a.m. and planning to park once and get around by walking or biking. Get updates on Yosemite traffic by texting ynptraffic to 333111.

1/ Highway 108, Sonora Pass. The road through the Sierra Nevada north of Yosemite reopened on June 9, after its longest winter closure in 18 years.
