March Madness First Four predictions and picks

16 SE Missouri State vs. 16 Texas A&M-Corpus Christi

This is going to be a game that, at times, will be ugly as both teams are a bit turnover-prone. At the same time, though, it should be exciting with two high-scoring and electric offenses matched up against defenses that, frankly, just aren’t as good. The Islanders from Corpus Christi are the hotter team coming in, though, having won 12 of their last 13 games. They keep the streak going and earn a date with Alabama.

Pick: Texas A&M Corpus Christi advances

11 Pittsburgh vs. 11 Mississippi State

Two of the Last Four In will get us started on Tuesday night vying for a right to face Iowa State. The Bulldogs were all-time flat in an SEC Tournament loss to Alabama but Pitt limped through the end of the year as well. With that said, I’ve seen Pitt’s ceiling be higher and I tend to trust the guard play from Jamrius Burton and the rest of the Panthers more than that of Mississippi State’s.

Pick: Pitt advances

16 Fairleigh Dickinson vs. 16 Texas Southern

Perhaps one of the strangest March Madness matchups you’ll see. Fairleigh Dickinson lost its conference title game against Merrimack, but the latter isn’t eligible for the NCAA Tournament. Texas Southern, meanwhile, is sub-.500 on the season. For me, this comes down to the Knights simply being more efficient offensively and, as is always crucial come the Big Dance, at the foul line.

Pick: Fairleigh Dickinson advances

11 Nevada vs. 11 Arizona State

It definitely hasn’t been the run up to March Madness the Wolf Pack were hoping for, having lost their last three games. Meanwhile, Arizona State went on a run in the Pac-12 tourney. On paper, though, these teams are relatively well matched. And I actually think the rest will play in Nevada’s favor as they’ll pull away late to stay alive in the tournament.

Pick: Nevada advances

East First Round | Midwest First Round | West First Round | South and East Second Round | Midwest and West Second Round | Sweet 16 | Elite Eight | Final Four and National Championship
