The first weekend of the NCAA Tournament set the tone for a crazy NCAA Tournament, and the second weekend has lived up to that billing.
No. 1 seed’s Alabama and Houston were bounced from the 2023 NCAA Tournament in the Sweet 16, making it the first time in ‘Big Dance’ history that no No. 1 seeds made the Elite Eight.
No. 1 seed in the South Region Alabama trailed by five at halftime to No. 5 San Diego State, but pushed ahead midway through the second half. After taking a nine point lead with about 11 minutes left, the Crimson Tide unraveled as star freshman Brandon Miller missed 16-of-19 shots in the 71-64 loss to the Aztecs.
As that was going on, West’s No. 1 seed Houston got run off the floor by No. 5 seed Miami, who was led by guard Nijel Pack. Pack, a Kansas State transfer, hit seven of his 10 three’s and Miami won 89-75, leading the Hurricanes to its second straight Elite Eight.
What was an open field has now become full of a shocking group of names left in the Field of 68. No. 4 seed Connecticut, who plays No. 3 Gonzaga on Saturday night in the West Regional Final, is the title favorite with the Bulldogs the third choice in the updated odds following the fall out of the Sweet 16.
Texas, who took care of Xavier in a wire-to-wire victory, is the second choice to win the title right after Friday’s results, only a few cents behind the Huskies.
Meanwhile between the South and East Regions, one of the following will make the National Championship game: Creighton, San Diego State, Kansas State or Florida Atlantic.
