For the first time in his career, Marcus Smart will begin an NBA season with a team that is not the Boston Celtics.

The veteran point guard and former Defensive Player of the Year was traded to the Memphis Grizzlies in a three-team deal earlier this offseason.

Smart was considered to be one of the leaders in the Celtics’ locker room, and was one of the longest tenured players on the team. Many fans were shocked to see him moved, but Smart says he’s trying to take it all in stride.

Smart told Jared Weiss of The Athletic that he sees the move to Memphis as a “fresh start.”

“A lot of things personally in my life this year have happened and it could just put you under, could put you in a dark place,” Smart said.

He mentioned that his house flooded at some point over the last year, something that would make life difficult for anyone, NBA player or not.

“So for me, to start over and get back to the grind,” Smart said.

On paper, it’s a move that should work well.

The Grizzlies have always been a team that have played hard on both ends of the floor, something that Smart brought a lot of of in Boston.

The Grizzlies will have to navigate life without Ja Morant for the first 25 games of the season, but there are few players better equipped to handle adversity in the NBA than Marcus Smart.
