Mark Cuban has toyed with political aspirations over the years, but he won’t be on the 2024 ballot.
Per Vaughn Hillyard of NBC News, the entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner confirmed that he’s not running for president. He had a simple reason for demurring.
“No. My family would disown me,” Cuban told Hillyard.
Cuban said he commissioned a poll to explore a 2020 run as an independent, but his overall numbers against Joe Biden and Donald Trump weren’t strong enough to run.
“If the numbers were to come back significantly higher, and I would have been able to take more away from either or both candidates, then I probably would have tried to convince my family,” Cuban told David Exelrod in June 2020. “But given where they were, it just wasn’t worth it.”
The political organization No Labels continues to seek centrist, third-party candidates nationwide. Cuban called those efforts “very important” and backed ranked-choice voting, which could pose more of a challenge to Democrats and Republicans.
“I like that they are trying a new path,” Cuban said. “I think the two-party system is broken.”
The Shark Tank investor recently started a company to provide more affordable prescription drugs, but he has political experience. While his NBA ties bolster Cuban’s national recognition, sports fans may not want a president whose team just tanked to deliberately miss the playoffs.
