There is sometimes no more riveting of a story than that of a father and daughter who struggle to escape and save each other from a tyrannical evil that tore the world and countless families apart. After announcing the project early last year, Netflix has brought together some of the best creative minds from near and far for a new period drama series called All The Light We Cannot See that is set to premiere on the streaming platform this November. Per the Hollywood Reporter, a new teaser trailer dropped this morning, giving us a firsthand look at the amazing, Pulitzer-prizing winning story of Daniel and Marie-Laurie LeBlanc.

All The Light We Cannot See is based on the Pulitzer-prize winning story of the same name written and published in 2014 by Anthony Doerr. The four-part limited series is being helmed by Shawn Levy, the producing giant behind Netflix’s landmark supernatural franchise Stranger Things, and Steven Knight who created the award-winning BBC show Peaky Blinders. Levy is also serving as co-executive producer alongside Dan Levine (The Boogeyman) and Josh Barry. Stars of this new series include newcomer Aria Mia Loberti, Marvel alum Mark Ruffalo, Hugh Laurie who captivated TV audiences on acclaimed series House, German actor Louis Hofmann (Dark), Lars Eidinger (White Noise), and Andrea Deck (Homeland).

The Story of Escaping a Regime and Finding the Light

The trailer opens with the ominous sounds of distant bombing and unsettling radio silence as we see Marie-Laure (Aria Mia Loberti) and Werner (Louis Hofmann), two teenagers on opposite sides of the battlefield during World War II. In the absence of dialogue we’re treated to beautifully melodic piano that sets the tone for the story. We meet a much younger Marie-Laure who is blind and living in Paris with her father Daniel (Mark Ruffalo), who is a locksmith for the Museum of Natural History.

Hitler’s conquest of Europe is encroaching on France, with bombings hitting cities closer and closer. We also meet Werner, an intelligent teenage boy forcibly enlisted into a Nazi training camp to track down illegal broadcasts. The Nazi army soon takes the capital of Paris, forcing Marie and her father to flee to the seaside town of Malo with a “legendary diamond” sought by the Gestapo. There they stay with her great-uncle Etienne, a reclusive World War I veteran who works for the resistance transmitting cryptic radio broadcasts. This causes both Marie and Werner’s paths to inevitably collide, who both reject the tyranny and instead bond over their “faith in humanity” and the “possibility of hope” in the wake of the calamities brought about by the war.

All The Light We Cannot See is set to premiere for streaming on Netflix on November 2nd. The first trailer for the film can be viewed below.
